AKM Project…
The team at AKM have designed and built a management information system (MIS) that allows you to manage your internal
and external costs for any size project, large or small.
Whilst the concept is not new, we believe that we have created a fantastic business tool which is not only simple to use,
but provides you with powerful data to help you run your business.
The software is in its final stages of testing and we are looking for one company to help us.
We are looking for a company to Beta test the software and help us ‘iron out’ any bugs
and ensure that the standard reports deliver the key information a business needs.
AKM Project can be utilised by all types of businesses as it is not industry specific. Are you that company?

The Techie Bit - Wireless Networking and Security (Part 2)
We pick up where we left off last month, discussing ways to secure wireless networks. Most modern routers and access points allow
several different ways to secure your network:
The simplest is WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy. This involves setting a password of varying degrees of complexity on your router or
access point. This password is then used to encrypt the data sent across the wireless connection. To join a WEP secured network you must
input this password into the device that is trying to connect. We would suggest that you use at least a 128 bit password (this is 26
characters long)
A great way to produce a random WEP password or key can be found at the following:
http://www.andrewscompanies.com/tools/wep.asp
A similar but slightly more secure password/key system is WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). The full advantages of this cannot be
used without a dedicated security server on your network but for home and small business purposes it works in the same way.
The second way to secure a wireless access point is to filter connections by MAC Address (Media Access Control) A MAC Address
is a unique code that belongs to any network card or adapter. They are 12 characters long and begin with 00. To find the MAC
address on your computer you need to do the following:
- Click the "Start" button.
- Click on "Run"
- In the "open" field type "cmd" and click "OK" or "Run"
- This will display a command prompt window on your screen.
- Type "ipconfig /all" and press return.
- In amongst the information displayed should be a “Physical Address”. This is your MAC Address. Make a note of it.
You can add this address to an access list on your router or access point and tell it to allow or deny this address from
accessing your network. Using this type of security you can explicitly define who can or who can’t access your network.
The third method is to employ the two of these methods together. Both using a WEP key and also an access control list. This
way you can be sure that your WEP password hasn’t fallen into the wrong hands.
Exactly how you implement any of these types of security will depend on what hardware and software you are running. Also make
sure you have at least some form of firewall on your internet connection and always ensure your antivirus is up to date.
These methods, while not infallible, will go a substantial way to protect your home network from outside attack.
Server Health Checks
Those of you who subscribe to our Platinum, Platinum Plus and Premier Service are already enjoying the benefits of a regular
server health check, within your contract.
The purpose of these health checks is to monitor your IT infrastructure and alert you to any issues or possible problems;
the most common issue being reliable data backups.
We can monitor system performance, the effect of usage on the network and look at how your current hardware and software
is delivering in your business.
Because of the way technology has developed over the years, you do not have to have a dedicated server with dedicated server
software to benefit from this service. As long as you have a broadband connection, we can dial into your ‘server’ and run
the checks.
We are pleased to announce that we can now offer this service to all our customers on an Arden ‘assist’ contract, whether you
use us for IT, Sage or Database. For as little as £15 + vat per month you could get your IT infrastructure health checked
once a month.
This additional service to your contract can be subscribed to on a ‘pay as you go’ basis, monthly invoice or annual arrangement*;
its up to you!
Why not give it a try and see what benefits you could receive as a result of a regular health check?
*£15 + vat per month for ‘pay as you go’ and monthly invoice
arrangement. If subscribed to annual arrangement a discount of 10% is offered, equivalent to £13.50 + vat per
month. One server health check would be completed for each month period and a summary report will be provided of any
findings or issues raised as a result of the health check.
