FTP ! SMTP ! Pop3!
Are you bamboozled with these phrases and what they are supposed to
do?
Here is a brief outline of what the letters mean and what they do.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol.
A set of rules used by the Internet community to send files. This is
used a lot for sending your files across the internet especially to
update a web site.
SMTP – Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.
A set of rules that allow you to send email messages over the net. Your computer will pack your email in a certain way, just like an
envelope, and send it across the internet to another computer or
mail server, like a post box. Then, once it’s in the postbox, the
rules will tell it to unpack the letter another way so you can read
it.
Pop3 - Post Office Protocol.
This is a set of rules that allows you to collect your emails from a
remote server. These are like Msn and Yahoo. Your emails are
stored in mailboxes on specific web sites and you need to be
connected to the internet to be able to read, reply, delete and send
emails.
HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.
This is a method used to transfer or convey information on the World
Wide Web. Its original purpose was to provide a way to publish and
receive HTML pages (web pages).
HTTPS – Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure.
This works in the same way as HTTP but is a more secure method of
sending information. It encrypts the data being sent and also sends
it to a different port on your server / router.
VPN – Virtual Private Network.
This is a private network often used by companies to communicate
confidentially over the net. A VPN can send data e.g. voice, data or
video, or a combination of these media, across secured and encrypted
private channels between two points. You open up a VPN line and then
remotely access the computer by Remote Desktop.
VNC – Virtual Network Computing.
This is remote control software which allows you to view and fully
interact with one computer desktop using a simple program on another
computer desktop anywhere on the Internet.
RDP – Remote Desktop Protocol.
This is a set of rules that allow you to remotely connect to another
computer. The other computer has to be set up to allow you to access
it and you will need to know the I.P address, the user name and
password to log on. This is not as secure as VPN and would advise to
use VPN.
IMAP – Internet Message Access Protocol.
This is a method of accessing electronic mail or bulletin board
messages that are kept on a (possibly shared) mail server. Email
stored on an IMAP server can be read, forwarded etc. from a desktop
computer at home, a workstation at the office, or laptop computer
while travelling, without the need to transfer
messages or files back and forth between these computers. Also you
do not need to be online to access your mail.
Techie Bit Suggestions
Is there anything that you would like to know more about? Perhaps
you’ve always wanted to know how to run a mail merge from Excel, or
want tips on how to use word better?
Whatever it is, we are interested in what you would like to read
about and what you feel will benefit your business. So please e.mail

Web Based Support
At AKM we have a web-based call logging system to record all
support issues and queries for our customers.
For those of you that are subscribed to our Assist Platinum,
Assist Platinum Plus and Assist Emerald Plus service you already
have direct access to this web based system to record, monitor
and track your reported issues Nothing is hidden, all detail is
available to you so you can check and evaluate the service AKM
is providing to you on a regular basis.
As part of our mission to improve the level of service provided
to our customers, we have introduced a number of changes with
this call logging system.
• Now every time a call is recorded for your business, the key
contact will receive an email to advise that it has been
received and assigned to an individual within the AKM team.
• Every time that call is updated by one of the AKM team, the
key contact will receive an email advising of the action taken
during that update process.
• When that call has been completed, the key contact will
receive an email to advise the total time taken by the AKM team
to resolve the reported issue.
• At all stages of that calls life cycle the key contact is
encouraged to view its progress via a web link.
For all of our Assist customers the key contact will receive an
email on the 1st of each month that summarises the calls or
actions that have taken place on the account during the previous
month. If you don’t receive one then it means that you haven’t
needed us during the period or we don’t have a current e.mail
address for you.
If you would like to view use the system but have forgotten your
login details, please email
