The Techie Bit - Upgrading Your Memory
Is your computer running a bit on the slow side recently? Over time users of a PC become increasingly more competent with them and try and do
more and more with their software without thinking about the hardware involved.
Windows XP has now been with us for nearly 4 years and many of us have had no need to replace a good PC running this operating system. As a
result there are lots of computers out there with 3 or 4 year old specifications.
What this means for most of you is that you have just about enough memory in your computers to run Windows and very little spare to do much more.
Around the time Windows XP came out the average amount of memory in a business desktop PC was 256Mb.
It may surprise you to know that just switching your computer on and letting it boot up will consume between 150 – 200 of those valuable megabytes.
The computer I’m using to type this article idles with around 193Mb used. “But that only leaves me 60Mb left” I hear you all cry. What can you do
with 60Mbs of free RAM? Find the time to make a cup of tea while Outlook loads up probably.
The majority of you you are only a few pounds away from rejuvenating your PC. Having 512Mb of RAM or even 1Gb can make the difference between a smoothly running
PC and one that’s destined for a premature hard disk failure.
I would suggest that you have at least 512Mb installed. This is an ideal amount for an older computer as the upgrade is relatively cheap, if you use your
PC a lot then adding 512Mb may be a better option especially if you run lots of programs at once.
Computers that have less memory use their hard disks more. The hard disk is where you store all of your documents and programs and they are prone to
failure with heavy use. This means an expensive repair and reload which can often cost as much as a new PC not to mention the possible loss of all of your data!
Upgrades currently cost about:
£32 for 256Mb
£49 for 512Mb
£99 for 1Gb
The price above is just for the memory chip. Information such as the make and model of your computer may be required to ensure a compatible memory upgrade.
We Passed!
As part of our commitment to Sage as a Business Partner and Solution Centre, we are obliged to complete a number of exams
on the products and services that Sage offer.
A year has come around quickly and last week we successfully completed the required exams. We are now able to continue to
support, sell, install and offer advice on the Sage portfolio under our Sage Solution Centre banner.
The hard work doesn’t stop there, Sage are very particular and require their Business Partners to regularly update themselves on the product portfolio.
So when new versions are launched, we have to ‘swot’ again and take more exams to ensure that we are still delivering a high quality service to our
customers and prospects.
With the new versions of Sage L50 and Payroll expected to be released in August this year, you can be confident in the knowledge that our team will be
fully briefed and aware of the new offerings, and with another round of exams to prove it!
